you like petrified wood, then this area will be of interest to you.
Hundreds of people drive past here everyday and don't even know it is
there. The wood is within 50 feet of the pavement. Some logs are over
4 feet in diameter.
Take hwy 89 south from Page, AZ. to milepost 487. From here keep an eye open for petrified logs next to the highway! Some are as close as 20 feet from the pavement. There are several roads going to the right (west) that have logs either next to them or right in the roadway. Between here and mile 485 we found one log that had amethyst crystals in the log!
At mile 485.5 look to the west and down in the dry wash and you can see some ruins that have the right-of-way fence going through the middle of one structure. On the south wall of this dry wash is a round hole. There is a petrified log back in the hole that was partially mined for the uranium. If you hike up this canyon you can see logs sticking out of the walls at different angles. This is on the Navajo Reservation, so there is no collecting allowed.
We have found one log that has clear quartz, smoky quartz, rose quartz, milky quartz, and amethyst quartz --- all in crystal form. But we're not telling where! Close to here is all we can say!
The hole in the wall is where a petrified log had been.
The following pictures were taken at about mile post 486 on the west side of the highway. There is a road going west, there.
